Abstract
This article argues that the academic library functions as a central pedagogical agent in undergraduate education, specifically in cultivating critical thinking and research resilience, two interrelated dispositions that are increasingly vital in an era of information abundance and artificial intelligence. Moving beyond the traditional perception of the library as a passive repository or support service, the author contends that library structures, professional expertise, and physical and digital infrastructures actively shape how students interrogate knowledge, tolerate intellectual friction, and persist through the iterative challenges of scholarly inquiry. Through an examination of reference interactions, curated collections, instructional scaffolding, spatial design, and emerging engagements with generative AI, the article demonstrates that librarians operate as co-educators who model epistemological questioning and normalize research struggle as a productive phase of learning. The library’s non-evaluative environment further distinguishes it from the classroom, affording students the low-stakes space to experiment, fail, and revise without performance anxiety. The article also addresses the democratizing function of the library, particularly for first-generation and underprepared students, for whom research resilience is not an innate trait but a learned competency that requires deliberate institutional support. Ultimately, the author posits that the library’s contribution to critical thinking and resilience is not incidental but foundational, and that its marginalization in curriculum design represents a significant institutional oversight. By reframing the library as a laboratory for intellectual perseverance and reflective judgment, this article calls for deeper integration of library services into undergraduate pedagogy and reaffirms the library’s enduring relevance in shaping not only skilled researchers but also informed, adaptable citizens capable of navigating complex information landscapes with confidence and discernment.
